I just lay my near-5-month-old down for a nap. As I was nursing him, I looked in his eyes and he was looking up at me with the surprised intensity that only a nursing child can give his mother when the influx of milk let-down catches him off guard. But there was another look there.
And I began to wonder what he was thinking. Then I wondered, how do you know how to nurse? Then I wondered, how does God get all the information you need into you so that you can properly gather what you need on this earth? Then I thought, it’s as if the baby is a blank canvas, but somebody has to invent the canvas.
Those thoughts came upon me in a swoop; it took me much longer to write them. And in just as quick a flash, the scripture Psalms 139:13-15 came to my mind.
For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Then I thought of the first Superman movie. Remember when Krypton blew up and Kal-el safely packed his son in the crystal pod thing? What happened in the pod-mobile? Kal-el had recorded the history and mystery of Krypton and all other things necessary for the future Clark Kent to achieve his potential.
That’s exactly what God does with us. Don’t you think that’s what happens throughout human gestation? God is speaking the mystery and instruction to that individual spirit, soul, and body. Speaking things specific to that individual, His creation…speaking things that can be drawn upon when the time is ripe.
The womb. It’s a pod-mobile.
