Pray for Japan and the surrounding areas, please. Now this should go without saying, but apparently, it must be said. Please pray for Japan, the decision-making authorities, the medical professionals, the children, the …everybody.
On various phone calls today several folks have told me that they got no sleep because they were up all night watching the media coverage of this latest natural disaster. I, too, awoke in the middle of the night and saw what had happened. It was a looooonnnnnnnngggggggggg day with my five kids yesterday and I chose to say a prayer and fall back to sleep. The circumstances of the morning (two sick children, teething baby, and two energetic-ready-to-learn elementary age boys) proved that my choice wise. I had to do what I could with what I had. And prayer is what I had (and have) for Japan. Prayer, sleep (and now, more energy) is what I have for my children.
On one of my calls, the customer service rep says she sat up in bed and said to her husband, “Turn on the TV, something just happened.” He turned on the news, and within seconds, the “Breaking News” banner scrolled across the screen.
I expected her to say, “…and then I began to pray since God had prompted me up in this time of need.”
She didn’t.
Instead, she said, “I was glued to the TV the rest of the night. I got no sleep.”
My heart questioned, even louder, something it’s queried before: has the media coverage and our obsession with viewing it (9-11, Haiti, et al.) rendered us paralyzed in prayer about these same situations? Would the circumstances be more positively influenced if we spent the same amount of time in prayer about the situations as we do watching CNN or Fox or our network of choice? Would the circumstances be more positively influenced if we spent 2 minutes per hour praying instead of 20 minutes of watching?
I am not presumptively challenging you; you are probably praying. I am definitely blatantly challenging myself. I don’t pray enough in these situations. I get caught up in the “Breaking News on Anderson Cooper 360” and so on. Tsk tsk.
I’m blogging now. But I’m getting off the PC.
Time to pray.
