Lauding Lactation (August 13, 2010)

This is just a quick thought…not a post, per se. Just an observation that if it were not for me breastfeeding this darling little girl, I would never get a chance to hold her. I had to–lovingly, gently, cautiously–scold her father the other day. For two days his answer to “Dad, can I hold the baby?” was Not right now or In a minute. Forty-eight hours is a loooonnnnnnggggggg minute!

If she were bottle-fed, they’d all say, Mom, I can feed the baby or Can I get the bottle ready for you? I know it’s true because they fight over who gets the wipes ready and who gets the diaper out. There was almost a knock-down, drag-out yesterday over who was instructed to get the blanket. Seriously guys?!

So, I’m just giving praise to God for his grand design of nursing at the breast. Yes, El Shaddai is God my provider, but that shad means breasted one. God’s image is reflected in woman as the provider of food to her young. It is a beautiful picture of God’s love for us, how he desires us to latch onto his life-changing Word, being nursed to spiritual life and health through an unparalleled relationship with our Creator. And I treasure the depth of meaning the Lord has shown me in that over the years. He chose woman to reflect that part of himself.

But today, my praise to the Designer is a little more shallow…today, I’m just glad to sit and bond with my little girl and not share because nobody else can nurse her in this house. Today I’m thankful that he created a way for me to have that oh-so-precious one-on-one time. Today she’s mine, mine, mine.

And in case I haven’t said it lately: girl! girl! girl!

(just had to get that out…thanks)
