The flight is booked. Round trip. With return flight to get you home in enough time to get the rest you need to the next leg of your life. The next leg of my life included very important tasks: taking a child somewhere and connecting with somebody about something and…
Honestly, now, I don’t remember. What I do recall is that I would have done all of it sleep deprived and perhaps put myself and others in harm’s way. But…
The flight was delayed. Not a few hours. Not a day. It was the kind where they give you several airports in the vicinity (i.e., 3 hours driving) and tell you “Good luck with that!” There were NO options till over 24 hours later. It was Monday and my Tuesday flight disappeared.
So I contacted the B&B manager and extended my stay. I stayed in my room that night. I slept. I actually slept. I was refreshed on Tuesday morning. With that energy, I made two more phone calls. Those two calls got me to 3 service companies who were able to come to the property and assess, quote, and fix 2 problems!
After the assessment of one, I realized it would’ve been thousands of dollars if it wasn’t repaired then. As it was, only $187.
Somewhere in all the hullaballoo, I rebooked my flight for Wednesday. I got another good night’s sleep and returned home able to serve my family and know I’d done a good job on my extended mission.
Did the child get taken somewhere? Yes.
Did the somebody get connected with? Yes, virtually and it was no issue.
Did my family come in clutch? Yep!
It was teamwork and compassion.
My sister recently experienced an over 48-hour flight delay. Guess what? She isn’t griping about it. She’s touting all the serendipitous occurrences along the way.
The longer I live, the more I realize that reacting doesn’t help anything. And when I look back on it, God is in all the details. I have more trust in just responding calmly to the circumstances. Do I still panic inside? Of course. Surprise is surprise.
But I find myself able to say “Hallelujah!” to the delays.
