Reading time 1-2 minutes. It’s a new sport: Court Crochet.
You crochet while you son or daughter dribbles a basketball up and down the court with their peers. Quite a few dishcloths, afghans, lap blankets, and baby blankets can be produced with this sport. All you need it a small water-resistant bag that fits snuggly between your feet on the bleacher, needles, and yarn.
Of course, there is a variation on this sport where knitting replaces the crochet. Then two needles are required, but all the other rules are the same.
Court Crochet is a hobby to some; it’s what they do when the child is at the practice. Raising yourself to a professional level in Court Crochet requires the ability to memorize needlework patterns. It is not recommended that you work on hats or edge work in a Court Crochet situation. Too many fouls result. A basic shell pattern is ideal: single-double-double-skip-two can be repeated to the rhythm of the dribbling ball and rows of stitches are completed at lightning speed.
It is critical that high-level Court Crochet athletes know when to stop and route for the home team, encourage their child, and engage in conversation with other parents. It’s a fine social balance. If your child has a lot of teammates and they are not played often, be certain to watch the game a little when your child is not playing. Later you can use your observations to discuss the generalities of the game so that they know you are vested. It should go without saying that you watch the game while your child is on the court. Of course, you can stitch slower and employ the glance-stitch method without fouls.
Fouls are committed in two ways. First, significant errors in stitchwork requiring pulling out at least one row constitutes a technical foul. Second, child commentary such as Mom, why don’t you watch my game instead of crocheting is a personal foul. If you get called on this second type of foul, your child may need a more engaging sport, as it is rare that they have enough time to watch what mom is doing. If personal fouls are repeated in a different sport, please consider a hobby other than Court Crochet.
Court Crochet has also been known to reduce stress in other areas of one’s life, giving the crocheter a new hobby and the ability to actually finish a project, a common mom feeling that is not easily articulated or satisfied.
