[Reading time 1-2 minutes] Today I give you the third suggestion in quality Bible study methods for busy moms. It’s hard to cultivate our relationship with God while mothering preschoolers. Well, shucks, it’s hard to cultivate our relationship with God with preteens, teenagers, grown kids or no kids. We live in a crazy busy world and cultivating our spiritual selves just takes time and dedication. I believe these three methods are easy. And the third may be easiest of all.
Don’t join a Bible study.
Engage in an individualized daily devotional study, but not in a row.
Use a children’s devotional.If you are a mom, you know how many times you’ve read the 2-sentence devotion to your little ones at bedtime or over breakfast and been convicted by its message. The simplicity of God’s Word is so apparent in these little books (easily found already on your shelves or in a thrift store). I’ve been brought to tears with these little ditties, realizing I need to forgive an offense or having to confess my judgmental attitude to the Lord.It would be easy to dismiss this approach. After all, what if someone asked you what you were learning in your current Bible study? You wouldn’t be able to give a make-yourself-look-deep-and-spiritual answer. But if you’re concerned about that, then you’re worried about what others think about you. But if you are in Christ and growing into who He wants you to be, who cares? In other words, Romans 8:1 frees you to study whatever works for this season.
A children’s study allows you to read it to yourself and your kids simultaneously and then you can talk about how you can use it in your life. If this isn’t biblical parenting, I don’t know what is. It teaches them the discipline of devotions and the need to apply to daily living. It also allows them to see their parents for who they are: children of God who need a Savior and daily help to navigate with life.
Yes, you maybe a grown up, but you are still a child to Him. So a children’s devotional is aptly titled.
