Bible Study (busy mom style) – Part 2 (July 10, 2011)

[Reading time   1-2 minutes]      We’re talking about Bible studies. In a talk given to a MOPS group about how to find and cultivate our relationship with God while mothering the preschool years, I made three suggestions of how to have a rich Bible study. Today I’ll share suggestion #2. It’s kind of silly, but it works great in mom-world.

Don’t join a Bible study.

Engage in an individualized daily devotional study, but not in a row. The key to this suggestion is the not in a row. My children are competitive Bible quizzers. They memorize between 50 and 300 verses of scripture from selected portions each academic year. I make an effort to study the books they are studying so that I am prepared to discuss their reading and so that I can knock out two birds with one stone (personal study time and engaged in my kids’ activities).Last year’s scripture portion was the Gospel of John. I invested in Beth Moore’s study John: 90 days with the beloved disciple, or some such title. Brilliant! That’s three months to knock out the study and be able to help the quizzers with the material.

The quizzing season came to a close in April 2011. I think I’m now on day 17 of the study. It has been quite a blessing to me in so many ways. I’ll continue through till I’m done. My Type A self might have felt horrible for not finishing by November 30, 2010. But she’s gone…moved out with my tight abs, manicured nails self.

I referenced Romans 8:1 in my last post. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. And that is the primary point of this Bible study approach.

90 days.

Not in a row.
