Albums and Movies (May 28, 2013)

I’m a child of the 80s. Does that mean I was a teen in the 80s and born in the 70s? I think it means the 80s culture was my formative time, when my senses were alive to what was going on all around me. Regardless, my point is the same.

The 80s were a time of many LPs. And rap burst onto the scene. Run DMC didn’t just have a 45. They had a 78. In my recollection, a 78 was usually the single…ad nauseum. Or as they’d put it: extended play. So you didn’t have to “put the needle on the record-a” again; it would just play longer so you could dance in your oversized whatever (Hammer pants or Madonna neon sweater) with whatever jewelry suited you (dookie chain or rubber bracelets).

Then perhaps, you’d go to the movie with your friends. For some it was the latest John Hughes flick…or ET, Flashdance, or Footloose. Remember Breakin’? And then there was Star Wars. According to my research, Star Wars was one of the first movies to have a prequel (Butch and the Sundance Kid qualified in the 70s).

Do I have a point? Your darned tootin’ I have a point! It’s about extend plays and prequels. Given our weather here in the fine state of Minnesota, I’m renaming the seasons for 2013.

Winter

Winter: Extended Play

Autumn: the prequel

Not sure what summer will really look like, so holding out on this one.

My lilacs are blooming. I stood in the damp yard this morning under the gray drippy sky. Unabashedly, I shoved my nose into the blossoms and took in a good hefty whiff. Might get me through the end of the prequel. Would anyone else like to sniff a lilac?

Anyone…?

Anyone…?
