Who Are the People in Your Family? (February 12, 2013)

Remember that song from Sesame Street? Well, I don’t tend to name names on my blog. I’m going to update the names of my family, with a brief explanation.

Stephanie: That’s me. But with a blog at a link with my name, kind of hard to hide.

Ethnic Man is y Awesome Husband whose coworker told of how his mouse inadvertently hovered over a picture released by the company. The picture was of an African-American guy standing in a Sears’ Catalog Father’s Day-like pose. Stock photography file names being what they are, the image title popped up when the mouse hovered. It said, “Ethnic Man Leaning.” Ever since then, I’ve referenced my sweetie as Ethnic Man. (It kind of reminds me of the Designing Women character in the later part of the series when she’d call out Black Man whenever Anthony walked in the room.)

The Headliner (13) is our bright, witty, talkative around his family. Quiet, reservedly polite, and extremely observant around others. He is a firstborn through and through. When he starts talking, he announces what is coming next. For example, he’ll say, “Mom, question.” Then he waits as if he wants to know if I want to read the article associated with the headline he just read. Other headlines include Just So You Know, Granddad Guess What, and Oh-I Forgot to Mention. There is absolute silence following these statements; you must acknowledge the headline. Ethnic Man aptly named him recently after seeing Mr. Deeds (Gary Cooper) and the courtroom room scene.

The Musician (11) is a splendidly awesome person. Compassionate, great with kids. Comical in a slapstickish way. He enjoys cooking and entertaining; he’s just a hospitable guy. Loves music…listening to it, singing it, playing guitar, piano, trumpet, dancing (only with family). He enjoys jazz, rap, country, hip-hop, pop, old soul, and broadway. Favorite musicians are Chris Tomlin, Stevie Wonder, Tobymac, Michael Jackson, Joe Sample.

The Athlete (8) needs to run a mile before he brushes his teeth. He is barely awake and asking to go out to play. I don’t know if it’s so much an energy thing as a “lover of the outdoors” thing. He also happens to have the most sensitive, compassionate, precious heart. Genuinely loves his brothers. Treasures his friends. He tries hard to reach the goal and values the process. Math is his favorite subject, saying “Well, it’s hard, but it feels good to be challenged and then figure it out.”

The Smile (6) is the header image on this site. He’s his mother’s child. He talks. A lot. More than me (that’s quite a feat). Loves to have fun. He is a true kid at heart. A ball of energy. Also a salesman and a negotiator; he’s my second firstborn, but also the first baby of the family.

Baby Dragon (2) is the she of the family. The true baby, the first girl. A princess? Yes. A diva? No, not today, not on my watch. Her charm can emote a belly laugh from Ethnic Man , her persistence is great than a summer cold, and her persuasive technique can twist her brothers like pipecleaners! I’m still learning her personality, and I’m also still learning girl. But I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to mother a daughter.

Our motley crew.
