Remember that line from Dori in Finding Nemo? It seems so simple, but most solutions are. Just keep swimming. I’m sort of in a place like that in my life right now. I want to just run away. I want to quit. I want to nap for a week. I want my husband to take a week of vacation and take the kids along and leave me to get all my major projects done at home. I wish for that, but I don’t want it. I wouldn’t know what to do with all that time. I’ve learned that the better productivity is the productivity experienced when you have to fight to get it done despite the circumstances.
More than the outward stuff, though, there are moments when I feel like I just need to go spend some time with God filling up. I mean really filling up. To use a Christianese phrase, to get a good soaking in the Word.
But that’s not going to happen either. I just have to keep moving and finding God along the way. I do have my quiet devotion time IF no children happen to wake up before me. I do pull out my purse-sized Bible when waiting for kids to come out of their music lessons. Mothering is the ultimate multi-task: there’s the multitasking daily items, and then there’s the multitasking of relationships and the God-woman relationship must be cultivated. It’s just that sometimes we have to get a little creative to do so.
I remember when my mentor was in this season of life. She kept her Bible out on the dining room table. If she had half a minute, she’d sit down and read. But even if she didn’t, her mind had a focus toward the things of God. And sometimes that makes all the difference in how we respond to our children and approach our daily tasks.
So I’m not going to run away. I’m not going to quit. I’m going to keep swimming. I hope you do too. And to encourage you along that path, I invite you to find and download the song Move on your MP3 player. It’s on MercyMe’s new album The Generous Mr. Lovewell. Great album! I heard the song before paying attention to the lyrics. It’s got a get-up-and-do-something beat. When I read the lyrics, they just hit home!
Isn’t that great?! Okay, go find it on your favorite (legal) song source and listen to the beat. Tomorrow I’m going to “move” and get projects done around the house. I’m going to pick three and hope to make a dent in two and accomplish one of those two. Yes, I’m expecting one whole task to fall through the cracks. And if/when it does, I’m just gonna move to the beat…no matter what may come!
