Batter Up! (May 29, 2011)

I’ve never been to a batting cage. Just realized that today as I stood in one, swinging away (and hitting, too, I might add). Before my turn, I was thinking, should I do this? I might pull something. I shouldn’t do this. If I don’t do this, I’ll never get in enough shape to NOT pull something. Well, I’m in line now. I’d better do this. Well, it’s all family, why not. Just do it.

So I got into the batter’s box and awaited the first pitch. My father called over to me, “Stephanie, have you swung a bat lately?” The short discussion that followed included me thanking him for having the same concern I had for myself. I couldn’t afford to pull something.

Now we all have these concerns. We’re getting older. It doesn’t feel like it, does it? My neighbor said the other day that parenting still feels like she’s playing house. I feel the same way. Every day I am re trying to figure out what I’ll do when I grow up. My body, though, my body knows that this is real deal, it is grown up and it gets injured easily. Not so forgiving at all!

My husband works hard to give me the opportunity to be home with the kids. And I work hard schooling them. I have learned (the hard way) that if I get hurt, there is no one to fill in for me. I am the day care lady. I am the teacher. If the day care lady is sick, I fill in. If the teacher pulls out her back while playing with her family over the weekend, I am the sub. Many of you are in the same position. You hear me and you feel me, don’tcha?

So please let’s all walk in wisdom as we play with our fams. You can’t afford to get hurt. You are the starting line up. You are the pinch hitter. You are in a position of strong job security. And neither of us is able to do any of it but for the grace of God.
