School’s Out…almost (December 15, 2008)

It’s Monday. For our 4-boy crew, this is usually the day that is the most productive in our school room. Today, however, is a little different. Mom is recovering from a nasty stomach flu-y thing. Not sure of the cause. We went out for Indian food on Saturday night. It was scrumptious…but mom’s dish was a little spicier than she prefers. The mango lassi offset the intensity, so all was well. Sunday morning after the kids’ took part in the church Christmas production, something went awry in mom’s stomach. And dad transformed into Super-Husband-Dad for the day. Mom…well, we’ll spare the details.

Now it’s -7 degrees in our rural town. The windchill is -31. Needless to say, it’s cold.

We finished our semester of math and phonics last Friday. The boys have worked hard through a challenging semester, and we’re proud of them. Today we finish our Konos co-op material. Actually, we’ll be schooling the rest of the week, but the unit is on love and generosity, so we’ll be crafting and caroling and other Christmas things that start with C. (I’m think Cuddling up in a blanket with hot chocolate sounds grand!)

So the little lambs will know all about the origins of Santa Claus and the amazing history of Handel, including a listening to Handel’s Messiah.

Tonight J is doing a demonstration at 4-H. As I type this, he is preparing the kitchen to make his cookies for snack. The demo will be how to roll out and use cutters for the cookies. But we have a box that includes cookie cutters that tell the Christmas story. It’s our family tradition, provided in a cool box with book from Aunt Sharron a few years back. So J is thrilled to share the message of Christ at 4-H! He will also be sharing his treasurer’s report. The club went to Target earlier this week to buy goodies for the Toys For Tots charity. They made some fun choices and we pray the recipients will be blessed. J was able to sign his first check as treasurer.

So today…is a lowkey day. If it weren’t the last day of the semester, school would be cancelled so mom could heal. Instead, mom’s pushing through.

We’ll post pics of cookies and such later.

Maybe.
