The Probability, Part 2 (July 9, 2008)

So what would be the probability of significant events occurring on the same date over the course of several years?

I’d be curious to hear the Kennedys answer to that. And if you would have asked my extended family that question 6 years ago, they’d probably have answered in the single-digit percentages. But then 2003 rolled around.

In our Minnesota home, I awakened early on July 6, 2003, to get to church in time to assist with communion service. It was Henry’s birthday so I gave him his present before I left: a positive result pregnancy test, predicting the pending birth of S.

While I was at service, Henry’s mom called to wish him a happy birthday. He was to serve as a greeter at church that night. The phone rang just after he left. It was his sister calling to tell me that his mother had passed away that day. What?! Huh?!

Two years later, on the same date, Henry’s father passed away, as well.

The circumstances beg the question: What is the probability?

I don’t know the answer to that, but I do know the Pressley family. I know that the three sisters and two brothers make a point to press through whatever circumstances resolved to remain united as a family. As such, they have purposed to claim this unlikely date for family remembrance and build a family reunion out of it. What better tribute to a couple who made sacrificial choices for the sake of their family?

Not one of us can explain why God’s plan unfolded the way it did on July 6. But the probability that God will use all things to for our good and His glory = 100%

Here is Henry with the attending grandchildren this past Sunday at Jeter Baptist Church, where we attended services before honoring these treasured parents.
