I Love My Job! (September 28, 2007)

It’s Friday. While the laundry is not done, we did have a laundry-fest day, making serious headway on the folding and ironing. The boys folded and I ironed. All the while we watched our library DVD selection: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Typical to the make-up of my children, one viewing isn’t enough. So while choruses of “Go go go Joseph…” reverberate through the house, I nursed the baby to sleep and started putzing on the computer. While there I remembered a few things:

1 – a monthly online subscription that I no longer want

2 – the satellite changes we were going to make to save some $$

3 – the claim status of the hail damage from earlier this summer

The result of these efforts were a $10 savings by unsubscribing from the other service, a $35 monthly savings on our satellite (amazing the deals they make when you threaten to switch carriers), and being moved to the front of the claim status line only because we called…when you don’t call, they don’t think you care.

I read a book once (can’t recall title or author to tell you and I lost the book). But the author said that every couple needs one person who stays home and one who works outside of the home. The author is a pastor who lived on a meager salary for years, saving little by little as scripture instructs. He had NO idea, but when he and his wife retired, they discovered they were quite wealthy.

His recommendation is this: One spouse works and brings money in the door and the other stays home and plugs the wall to keep the money from leaking out of the back. He argues that if both spouses are working, there’s no time between commuting, shopping, cooking, and child-rearing to make phone calls to find out if you can “save money on your car insurance.”

He’s right! My husband is on a special project. There are days he’s working 18-hour days between home and the office. He said he’d call the satellite company. He said he’d check on the claim sometime this week. You know what? He doesn’t have time! But I do…so I checked. And now there is nearly $50 back in our monthly liquid budget.

This is my job: wife and good thing to my husband. I’m helping him. I’m meeting a need. And I get to do it in comfy clothes, while dancing and singing to “Joseph” with my littles, and munching on some slammin’ chocolate chip cookies.

I just remembered there’s another subscription I’ve been meaning to cancel. That’s another $20 in the pocket. Gotta go do my job…which I love!

I hope you love yours, too.
